I was recently invited to participate in a breakfast networking event with the Treble Victor Group. The event was held at the Albany Club, a beautiful and historical venue. The mission for Treble Victor Group is to enable ex-military leaders to achieve their full potential in the marketplace, through their common values, teamwork, mentorship and their network’s connectivity. I can personally relate with the group being an ex-professional athlete. The transition from something you know so well, something that has consumed most of your life and something that has created the person you are today into the business world can be a scary thing. Having a support system such as Treble Victor Group is a great place for people to network, connect and develop. I would honestly love to create something like this for athletes, maybe not top paid professional athletes since they may already have an extensive network, but for junior athletes, Olympians, semi-professionals that needed to make a life-altering decision. This happened to me at the age of 22 when my semi-professional hockey team folder in the face of the recession. I had to make a scary and difficult decision to jump back into business school in order to receive some valuable guidance and advice. Nevertheless, it would have been nice to be surrounded by people that knew exactly what I was experiencing.
After attending this event and networking with inspiring ex-military individuals who shared great stories about finding their new passion and mission in life, I was inspired to create this blog.
Here are some reasons why soldiers make great business owners:
- Strong leadership skills
- Dedication and perseverance
- They know how to effectively manage risk
- They are resilient
- They are disciplined and focused
- They are motivated
- They operate well under pressure
- They have experience getting things done with limited resources
- Team oriented
- Strategy oriented
