It’s an honour to give our next spotlight to Elton Correia, Founder of Empire Dezine Inc. located in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. See his Q&A below:
Why did you decide to be a business owner?
I wanted to become a business owner for many reasons. Firstly, I felt that my creativity and attitude just didn’t fit in the construction world. I cared more for the work I was doing, and the finished product then any coworker, manager, or owner. Simply put I am a perfectionist when it comes to work.
My father owns his own business, and he always taught me that when your doing a job, treat it like it’s yours.
Clients recognized my skills and talents and would always eventually come to me for questions, advice, or changes. Doing my work and the work of my superiors, while always being treated like a number and not a person.
I was always passionate about learning. Never satisfied with the knowledge I had and always seeking more. Where others only saw problems, I saw challenges. Challenges to learn and advance myself forward.
In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of being a business owner?
Pros and cons for me and my business would definitely have to be long hours.
Being busy is good. Means your working and making money. But now as a business owner I need to find the work, meet people, sign contracts, do the work, juggling multiple jobs at the same time. Completing the work, as well as getting paid. I’m one person, doing the job of many. I love what I do and the people I work for, but it does get exhausting and sometimes it is hard to find that time just to relax a little bit.
What are some hurdles you had to overcome while being a business owner?
Organization! When I was just a worker I would show up, work, then go home. Running
a business is so much more than that. It’s the paperwork. Keeping track of emails, and organizing them. Receipts, invoices, expenses, and all that fun stuff. My work was phenomenal, but my organization for paperwork was horrendous. With a little bit of research I found some programs to keep me on track and organized.
What is your vision and exit strategy for the business?
My vision would be to expand my company. Hire some more salesman, and a small office staff to take care of paperwork so I can focus strictly on working and delivering custom high end products to my clients. In regards to exit strategies, I’m not thinking about that just yet. But when I do I will definitely call BizON for some advice.
