It’s an honour to give our next spotlight to Mike Viney, Founder of Deck Works Co located in Melbourne, Australia. See his Q&A below:
Why did you decide to be a business owner?
I chose the path to become a business owner because I wanted to do work that I love and something I’m highly passionate about; instead of working to build someone else’s dream. Once discovering this passion, I was able to build out a business around this, giving me the ability to pursue it full time whilst supporting myself financially.
In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of being a business owner?
There are many advantages and disadvantages to being a business owner which must be weighed to decide whether it’s the correct path for a certain individual. The freedom of choice which comes about as a result of being a business owner is definitely alluring however you also can lose leisure time if you don’t manage time correctly. In comparison to climbing the corporate ladder, as a business owner, the results of your efforts can be exponential and you aren’t limited in that respect. At the end of the day, the buck stops with you and this responsibility can be both stressful at times but also empowering.
What are some hurdles you had to overcome while being a business owner?
There are various hurdles which I’ve had to overcome as a result of being a business owner, things which I think are common to most founders throughout the stages of a business. Remaining disciplined day-to-day, having constant motivation and drive is also something I’ve had to keep up. Networking with like-minded people, having mentors, reading inspirational books and watching empowering speeches help with this. Early on, developing structure and routine for day-to-day operations is important, especially for early stage entrepreneurs working solo or with a distributed team.
What is your vision and exit strategy for the business?
The vision for Deck Works is to enable as many entrepreneurs as possible to build their dreams. To achieve that the current focus is on further implementing systems and structures around day-to-day operations to function autonomously, enabling myself to work on the business and growing capacity. At this stage of the business we’re focused on creating as much value for entrepreneurs as possible, and loving our work; so an exit strategy is not something we’re looking at in the short term. Looking towards the future, potential paths include industry acquisition or a strategic merger with complimentary businesses.
